The first personalized, gold-coated pacemaker in the country was implanted at the Cardiology Clinic of the University of Pécs Clinical Center, the higher education institution based in southern Hungary revealed on Monday.
In their statement, they explained that the special procedure was necessary because the patient showed a hypersensitivity reaction to the traditional titanium-containing generator. Titanium sensitivity is an extremely rare condition in which the body has an allergic reaction to the implanted device.
After detailed examination, the gold-coated pacemaker generator was manufactured individually, according to the patient’s underlying condition, as such a device is not available on the market.
They reported that only a negligible number of similar interventions have been reported in the international literature to date, and this was the first time such a device had been implanted in Hungary.
The pacemaker generator is not only special because of its composition, but also because it is a good example of how modern medicine is increasingly moving towards personalized care, the announcement noted.
